Wildlife West Nature Park is the premier attraction in Edgewood, New Mexico - not to mention the entire region. Located conveniently just 20 minutes east of Albuquerque, Wildlife West is a wildlife preserve, enhanced zoo, entertainment venue, and education facility. All the park's captive animals are non-releasable, and the Park has the distinction of being one of the few - if not the only - zoos built entirely by youth. Each year, Wildlife West hosts a wide variety of events. The annual Wildlife West Music Festival - this year held from August 6 to 9, 2010 and including such acts as Claire Lynch, Pat Donohue, Spring Creek, Small Potatoes, and many more - has become one of the area's best recognized and best attended events of the year. Every Saturday during the summer, the Park hosts a Chuckwagon Sunset Supper, featuring a traditional barbecue dinner (vegetarian option available; must be requested in advance), falcon show, and entertainment by Syd Masters & The Swing Riders. The Chuckwagon Sunset Suppers have become popular not only with Edgewood area residents but with an increasing numbers of our neighbors from Albuquerque and other communities who come to spend a little time visiting the animals, learning a few things, and experiencing a bit of good old traditional entertainment.
Other events include the Bear Fair, Green Energy and Kite Festival, Harvest Festival, and local theater productions. The Park also provides employment for people ages 14 to 25 through the New Mexico Youth Conservation Corps program, and holds two one-week sessions of Junior Zookeepers' Camp in June. Wildlife West offers dry camping during many of its events, and there is plenty of lodging just a few miles away in Moriarty, New Mexico.
